Week on the Chesapeake: Part 1

For those of you who don't already know, my parents are on an epic round-the-eastern-half-of-the-U.S.-on-a-boat adventure this year. It's called the Great Loop. Their blog is right over there on the right if you want to take a peek.

Anyways, we hadn't seen them in a few months and hadn't seen their floating home ever. And we had a three day weekend. Cue Week on the Chesapeake.

After meeting us in D.C. on Sunday we drove back with my parents to Annapolis where their boat was docked. We spent the next two nights in Annapolis at a great marina. It was great to finally see the boat my parents are spending the year on, and we discovered that it felt more spacious and comfortable than we expected. There are a lot of different outdoor spaces, so as long as the weather is good (they’re chasing summer) it didn’t feel crowded even with the four of us.

Monday was Memorial Day, and it was graduation/commissioning weekend at the Naval Academy so Annapolis was hopping. We wandered town, enjoying the architecture, warm (hot!) weather, and learning a bit about the naval academy and other history.

The rest of the week Matt and I were working. We’re extremely fortunate to have jobs where we can occasionally grab our laptops, cell phones, and hit the road. My parents have a Verizon ‘mifi’ which enables them (us) to have internet on the go wherever we may be.  We had both informed our bosses that we would be working east coast hours so we could be off in time to have dinner with family. This meant that we didn’t have phone calls during the first few morning hours of the day (west coast was still sleeping). So Tue-Fri my parents woke up early, started the engines, and motored across/up the bay while Matt and I buckled down to work. We took a few breaks here and there to observe progress but were actually surprised by the ease with which we continued to work. After arriving in port my parents would make lunch and then wander off to explore whatever little town we were in that day while Matt and I finished work.

Tuesday we arrived in St Michaels, which is on the east side of Chesapeake Bay. After getting off work Matt and I took time to wander the town, and popped into their Maritime Museum as well. It’s an adorable small town with lots of great buildings and cute shops. The museum was interesting as well.
